The smallest species of gorilla, the Western Lowland Gorilla, has the scientific classification ‘Gorilla Gorilla Gorilla’.
8 Dec
The west lowland gorilla, a subspecies of the Western Gorilla, is classified as critically endangered. As per usual with endangered species, they do sod-all to help themselves. They reproduce slowly because the females only become sexually at age nine or ten and then only bear children roughly once every five years. The males stand around 5 feet 11 inches tall and weigh about 400lb.
The most famous of the species is Binti Jua (meaning ‘Daughter of Sunshine’) who you’ll remember as the gorilla that saved the 3 year old boy that fell into the gorilla enclosure at Birmingham Zoo, Alabama. She picked up the unconscious toddle and walked him to the gate, guarding off other gorillas so that the guards could collect him. Awesome really.
