The Star Wars character name ‘R2D2′ stands for ‘Reel 2 Dialogue 2′

The name came about whilst George Lucas was mixing the soundtrack to American Graffiti. The reels and dialogues were numbered and prefixed with an ‘R’ and ‘D’ respectively.
