Cigarettes can contain whale vomit!
30 Dec
In 1994, the five major American cigarette companies were asked to submit a list of the additives they use in cigarettes to the United States Department of Health and Human Services. Up until this point, the ingredients had been a closely guarded secret. This list contained no less than 599 additives!
With things like apple and apricot extract, bay leaf, butter, chocolate, fennel, honey, rum and raisin being on the list, things don’t seem so bad. That is until you spot some of the less attractive ingredients.
One of those on the list is Ambergris Tincture, something more commonly known as whale vomit. Ambergris is the aggregate secretion of the bile glands into the intestine of a sperm whale, expelled (one way or the other) as a solid mass. It’s used in adding scent to perfume too but at least we don’t actively inhale that!
