In 2009 the World Record for Domino Toppling was Broken by Toppling Nearly 4.5 Million Dominoes.
23 Feb
Clearly some people have way too much time on their hands but it’s an incredible thing to watch. The attempt was made at the annual ‘Domino Day’ event in the Netherlands and although part of the final section didn’t fall, 4,491,863 of the 4.8 million stones (dominoes) fell, smashing the previous record of 4,079,381 stones.
What The Fact?
It took 89 ‘builders’ two months to set up the attempt meaning each builder had to set just under 54,000 stones each! Each year a theme is chosen for the event and designers are given the task of building the stage for the new record attempt. In 2009, the theme was ‘The World In Domino‘ with 8 distinct sections (called flows) representing Northern America, Latin America, Africa, Europe, Oceania, Asia and Antarctica. The event is organised by Endemol, creators of TV shows like ‘Extreme Makeover: Home Edition’, ‘Big Brother, and ‘Fear Factor’.

Some Other Domino Toppling Records
What you’ve got to know about these records is that they were all set at the same time! In the 2008 event, which was the event’s 10th anniversary, the theme was breaking records. In fact, it was called ‘Celebrating 10 years of Domino Day – Breaking more World Records than ever’. Here’s a rather impressive list of the records they broke that year.
- Longest domino spiral (200 m)
- Highest domino climb (12 m)
- Smallest domino stone (7 mm)
- Largest domino stone (4.8 m)
- Longest domino wall (16 m)
- Largest domino structure (25,000 stones)
- Fastest topple of 30 metres of domino stones (4.21 sec)
- Largest number of domino stones resting on a single domino (727 stones)
- Largest rectangular level domino field (1 million stones)
Impressive, No?
Whatever you care to think about these people, it takes a huge amount of patience and nerves of steel to build set up this kind of thing. I know if I only had to set up just one of those dominoes, I’d have screwed the whole thing up in an instant! If you can think of anything that requires more attention to detail and planning to pull off then let us know,..I certainly can’t!
